For classic French cuisine served on Villeroy Boch china and excellent service, look no further than this little restaurant where — hallelujah — cellphones are not permitted. Don’t visit here to eat; this is a place to dine. Indulge your inner gourmand with duck confit garnished with lentils and rhubarb compote or the superb rillettes made with pork belly, and follow with filet mignon bordelaise or braised lamb paired with demi glace enriched with fines herbes, red wine and calvados. Finish with tarte tatin or handmade truffles. Prices are reasonable and set menus even more of a bargain with four courses at $49, with pairings from the excellent wine list available for an additional $30. Life of Pies

Times Colonist readers made delicious suggestions on where to find fabulous dessert pies. After the votes were counted, those made by a baker/farmer on a small island across from the mural-filled town of Chemainus proved to be the sweetest of all.

Anyone who has run their own restaurant will tell you the hours are horrendous. You never get a day off and the minute you set money aside, you have to spend it. The day the bar fridge breaks down is the same one that the toilets flood. The pilot light in the oven won’t work, all of your deliveries are late and you need to act as if you don’t have a care in the world because it’s your job to put other people at ease – even when someone complains about the food after they have eaten every bite of it.
